Description
Indications
Ferrous Sulphate is primarily indicated in conditions like Acute diarrhoea, Anaemia, Iron deficiency anaemia, Iron-deficiency anaemia prophylaxis or for mild iron deficiency, Iron-deficiency anaemia with chronic renal failure, Mild iron-deficiency anaemias, and can also be given in adjunctive therapy as an alternative drug of choice in Chronic inflammatory disease.
Side Effects
The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Ferrous Sulphate are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Nausea, Diarrhea, Constipation, Epigastric discomfort, Black stool, Staining of teeth.
Contraindication
Ferrous Sulphate is contraindicated in conditions like Hemochromatosis, Haemolytic anaemia, Haemosiderosis.
Warning
Discontinue use if symptoms of intolerance appear. Occasional gastrointestinal (GI) discomfort, as nausea, may be minimized by taking it with meal. Care should be taken in the patient who may develop iron overload, such as those with the haemochromatosis, hemolytic anemia or red cell aplasia. Iron chelates with tetracylines and the absorption of both products may be impaired. The absorption of drug may be impaired by the penicillamine and by antacid. Such interaction can be reduced by separating administration of each products by several hours.
